Some people cannot understand my great fascination with the band Eraserheads yes the same band composed of Ely Buendia, Raimund Marasigan, Marcus Adoro and Buddy Zabala who took the music industry by storm during the 90s. I’m now 18 which makes me 3 years old when they launched their first album UltraElectroMagneticPop!, about 5 when they released Cutterpillow, their best-selling album which reached a 10x platinum status, and probably I was 12 when Ely decided to call it quits and left the band. you see, I wasn’t there during their heydays, didn’t see them perform live, doesn’t have any of their album and I wasn’t aware that they broke up. I do remember singing Toyang (it’s my favorite then because of the “pen pen” part), Ligaya, Julie Tearjerky, Ang Huling El Bimbo, Overdrive and Pare Ko. I remember watching Julie Tearjerky and Ang Huling El Bimbo in MTV with my sister because she loves those songs then. I actually wasn’t aware of who are the geniuses behind those songs, I was too young to care then. If memory serves me right, I started getting to know them around 2003 when we were doing a general cleaning at home and my sister’s speakers are in full blast with the songs of Eraserheads playing and then suddenly my ultra cool aunt said to my sister “uy totoo ba yan? Eraserheads!” I didn’t quite catch what my sister said and then my aunt spoke again “alam mo kung bakit sila nagbreak kung sino nakaaway ni Ely, yung drummer nila ang nakaaway niya”.

I was like so Eraserheads sang those songs and now they’re disbanded, ohh OKAY.

Then came the tribute album UltraElectroMagneticJam and our spankin’ new DSL connection, I downloaded some of the songs, I didn’t like some of the versions so I downloaded the original ones. I was really into blogging then and as I bloghop I got to know more of the Eraserheads and their music. I’ve discovered their lesser known songs, and became more convinced that those four guys are nothing short of a genius (yes they are, hey a fan speaking here!). They were even able to come up with a christmas album “FRUITCAKE” and a BOOK based on that album that sold like hotcakes.

My friend Brainard is the only person whom I share the fascination with because most people are into RnB and Cueshe! HAHA! Okay, that was a joke. From then on, I became a big fan of the ‘heads and especially Ely Buendia. I like LOVE Ely Buendia. He’s a songwriting genius, he just wants to rock out and let his music be heard, doesn’t let fame get in his head, and we can’t deny the fact that he has good looks. :]]]

Going back to their music, their words are simple, pangmasa but it speaks of reality. Their music transcends generations so it isn’t really surprising that even after 6 years of their break-up more and more people are being drawn to their music.

As most of you know, they held their first reunion concert last August 30, 2008 which was cut short. I’ve heard the rumors since early July, I think. I never actually believed it till it happened. I wanna stab myself for not being there, because it be might be a now or never thing. good thing they did another one last March 7, 2009 and I made sure that I’d be there no matter what. I had no one to watch the concert and so I tagged along with the Circus Mailing List people (group for fans of eheads and they’ve been existing since 1998. WHOAH!) I didn’t know how did I found about them but they’re sure fun to be with. They made The Final Set much more fun, coz it’s good to be around people who shares the same interests. :D The Final Set has been one of the most memorable night of my life. It was the night of many firsts, It was my first time to go to a concert which I actually paid for (YES IT IS!), first time to watch the 4 guys perform together, and a whole lot moreeeeeee!

Until now, the 4 guys continues their craft with their respective bands. Ely Buendia
with Pupil, Buddy Zabala with Cambio and The Dawn, Marcus Adoro with Markus Highway and Raimund Marasigan with his many bands HAHAHA. Sandwich, Pedicab, Cambio, Gaijin, I don’t know if there’s still more. Of their offshoot bands the one I listen most is Pupil, well Ely’s there but the 3 other guys (Yan Yuzon, Wendell Garcia and Dok Sergio) are GREAT too. With or without Ely, i’d probably listen to their songs too. :)

Anyhoo, this has been lengthy and I don’t wanna bore anyone who’s reading this, well i’m guessing you are bored now. i’ll forever be an ERASERHEADS fan, no matter how weird I look when i’m fangirling. :)
